The Definitive List of Things to do Now You’re Engaged

by Quendon Hall

Getting engaged is an exciting time. Things are going to change immeasurably from now on and for the better. Now the question has been popped and the yes has been given, what do you do now?

The list is long and time may be short, so we have put together this quick list of the things you need to do now you’re engaged. We hope it helps!

Tell Everyone!

Now you’re officially engaged to be married, it’s time to break the news. Start with family, the close friends and work your way out of your social circles until you have everyone covered. By starting with your nearest and dearest and working outward, you lower the risk of loved ones feeling left out.

Ring Sizing

You may have had a hand in choosing your engagement ring, so it might already be fitted. If not, now is a good time to do it as everyone you meet for the next few weeks is going to want to see it. Now would also be a good time to look for the wedding rings to go with it…

Set the Date

With the best will in the world, life sometimes gets in the way and weddings can be delayed. It’s not an ideal situation so it’s a good idea to set a date early and let people know. That way, you have a definite timescale to work to and you are more likely to stick to it if others know and are planning for it.

Start Saving

With the average wedding costing around £20k, you need to begin saving right away. Set a budget and stick to it as scope creep can become expensive!

Create a Guest List

It’s advisable to seek input from close family when creating the guest list to minimise family tension and unnecessary heartache. Set a maximum limit and stick to it. Filter and refine the list until everyone is happy, or as close to it as they can be.

Book Your Venues

As soon as you have a date, book the venues. Book the church/registrar and reception venue as far in advance as you can. Selection often means visiting multiple venues, so put aside time to achieve it all in a short length of time. Booking also gives you a better idea of how much it’s all going to cost.

Arrange the Dress

The dress! As soon as you have planned the kind of wedding you want, it’s time to go dress shopping. You will need a budget as it’s all too easy to overspend here. Once you have found a dress, ensure that it will be ready at least a couple of weeks before the big day. That leaves enough time for alterations and last minute changes.

It is understandably difficult to cover the entire wedding preparation in a single blog post, but we think we have everything covered. Do you have anything to add? Let us know if you do!
